Children's villages

The SELAM children's villages offer the children a new home, schooling, medical care and caring, loving support. Here they are looked after, prepared for life and supported. This lays the important foundations for later social and professional integration.

At the Addis Ababa location, the children move to the SIL program at the age of 18 and leave the children's village. At SELAM Wukro, the children continue to live on the premises or on the university campus until they have completed their initial training. During the semester break, they return home to their SELAM family in Wukro.

Many children have experienced traumatic experiences before being admitted to SELAM and require additional care. Here, SELAM works with social workers who have also attended specific courses on trauma management or with external therapists.

Semi Independent Living

At the age of 18, the young people leave the children’s village and move into SELAM shared accommodation outside the village, which is called “semi-independent living”.

SELAM supports the young adults until the end of their apprenticeship or studies and for 6 months after that. The support is provided financially as well as through supervision by SELAM social workers. This gives the young adults time to gain a foothold in the world of work.
